Back from Spring Break

When Vacation Fails You, How Do You Truly Recharge?

There’s a reason why Spring Break exists. At this moment, the Christmas holiday is long behind us—and the carefree days of summer are still too far off to get excited about them just yet. With spring upon us, the weather is nicer, and people are yearning for a break.

According to data from the U.S. Travel Association, taking time off from work can improve productivity. However, many people do not use the vacation days they are given. 705 million vacation days went unused in the U.S. in 2017. For those people who do take vacation, it can be an exhausting experience. The packing, the travel, the hustle and bustle of the trip itself, and the high expectations can leave some people more exhausted and even more stressed when they return to work. That’s not a good situation.

If your Spring Break has worn you out, here are some ideas for recharging. Just remember TAKE-GIVE-SHARE:

TAKE 10 Minutes Each Day

If you are interested in meditation, DoYouYoga.com recommends—when starting out—to limit it to 5 to 10 minutes each day. Anyone should be able to sit still for 10 minutes. Even such a short period can have benefits. Meditation can be very simple. Sit comfortably in a quiet place, close or relax your eyes, and take deep easy breaths. Try to focus on the moment and on the breathing. Let your mind be at ease. You can always fixate and stress out about the million little things you have to do after you meditate. But for 10 minutes, take a mental break.

GIVE Yourself the Gift of Sleep

Author and sleep scientist Matthew Walker wants people to know that you can’t make up for lost sleep on the weekends. It doesn’t really work like that. Instead, you should give yourself the best opportunity for a good night’s sleep, each and every night. Even if you aren’t able to sleep for the recommended eight hours, you should at least be in bed with the lights off and your phone put away early enough to give yourself a fighting chance at a good night’s sleep.

Gifting yourself some extra hours of sleep, over an extended period of time, could be even more beneficial than a vacation. And it’s much cheaper than airline tickets.

SHARE a Homecooked Meal

You shouldn’t be surprised that I’d recommend people cook more at home. Obviously, there is a financial benefit to cooking at home. But if you are feeling worn out, you may want to take a look at the food you’re eating. Food is fuel. It provides the necessary nutrients to get you through the day. Saladmaster has several recipes you can try. See what works for you, and if it makes a difference. Keep the menu simple, the ingredients few and within reach, and you might find you enjoy the process as much as the final result.

How do you recharge? (For me, I enjoy listening to audiobooks on the way to and from work. I also set aside some time each night to read.) Share your spring recharge suggestions on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Use the #Saladmaster hashtag so we can see it.

Better Snack Options for the Big Game

Let's Do Lunch

Let's Do Lunch

"The old tradition is breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper, and I think that very much rings true today. Having a good breakfast refuels you after the overnight fast and provides you with energy to concentrate and improves your mood. For lunch time, if you are having a heavier meal, you have the afternoon to use all those calories."
